Chicken and Dumplings

When I was a kid, I wanted to play:

I was talked out of it.

A friend of my mom called me up and asked me if I had ever broken a leg, dislocated a shoulder, or sprained a finger. Of course the answer to all those questions was “No”. I fancied myself a tomboy; able to play rough with the boys and not get hurt. But… I was effectively scared into “safer” activities.

Years later I was in High School and on the Tennis Team. I sucked. I remember being at another school for an “away” game and getting my ass kicked. When the match was over I headed over to our bench to grab water and a towel. And that’s when I saw her.

Coming off the football field was a tall lanky girl in a uniform; a football uniform. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and there was dirt on her face. I quickly moved to the side when she said, “Excuse me” and discreetly stared.

I felt a mixture of awe and resentment as I watched her shuffle past.

My mom’s friend was an asshole.

Thanks for the comments! I just found out about XKCD the other day. I’m a believer, now ;)

I know how you feel about the football incident.

A similar thing happened to me with swimming. When I was little, I was told that the drain at the bottom would suck you up if you got too close lol

Yeah… I discovered XKCD a few weeks and feature a comic on my MySpace. I’ll admit I don’t get ALL of them, but I do alright for the most part.

Can I assume you already read Penny Arcade? Those guys are hilarious, too.

“I was told that the drain at the bottom would suck you up if you got too close”

    LOL… that’s just mean! :-P
