Soon I Will Be Invincible - Pure Awesomeness in Book Form

So I’m going to do something a little different today and attempt to review a book. I loved it so much, was so entertained, was so caught up in the story, I HAVE to share it with you. It is my hope that by the end of this post, you’ll be curious enough to buy it, read it, and hopefully love it as much as I do. Even if you don’t read it, at least purchase it so the author can make a few bucks and feel encouraged to write other AWESOME literature.

I don’t normally review things, so the fact I’m doing so now should definitely tell you something.

The book I am recommending is called “Soon I Will Be Invincible” by Austin Grossman. This novel takessoon i will be invincible place in a world of superheroes and villains. If you’re a fan of comics and the formula behind them, then this is a must-read. The story is told from the point-of-view of Doctor Impossible (evil genius and ruler of the world hopeful) and Fatale (female cyborg and newest member of The Champions - the most famous Superhero team in the world). The novel starts with Doctor Impossible in prison and news that the strongest member of The Champions is missing. Through Doctor Impossible we learn how he landed himself behind bars and exactly what drives his quest for world domination. Fatale shows us what it feels like to be the new guy; we experience her struggle to fit in, to understand her new teammates, and to truly find her place in the world. The reader is lead down a path of origin stories, flashbacks, and memories. In the end we learn how intricately the main characters are connected, what motivates them, and who or what was behind the hero disappearance.

It’s been a long time since a novel engaged me so much I finished it in a day. Reading this book was not only interesting and fun, but in a way, it reminded me of how exciting it can be to slip into a different world and completely lose myself. Grossman manages to take a universe, one that we are all familiar with in some way, and make it real. The men and women portrayed are more than just masked crime fighters and diabolical criminals, they are very much human. Even though some individuals boast super strength, the power of flight, and other God-like abilities, they experience love, pain, and loss just like us.

The writing is natural and flows extremely well. The use of imagery is superb. Where some authors can make your head explode with the amount of description or leave you confused by not giving enough information, Grossman does a wonderful job of painting a picture. The humor never tries too hard and a few parts made me laugh out loud. All the characters are likable on some level, which makes getting to know them a process you look forward to. Whether or not they fall on the side of good or evil, Grossman does a great job of creating 3-dimensional people you can really feel for and relate to. “Soon I Will Be Invincible” is a book unlike any other. It’s creative, funny, witty, and simply a good read.

So yeah, check it out.

When I saw this title in my reader, I thought YOU were writing a book; and THAT would’ve been pure awesomeness.

Instead, I’ll have to be content with a recommendation…for now.

Sci-Fi’s hit or miss with me, but I’ll give her a whirl.

@ Random- Cool! I really hope you check it out. I enjoyed it SO MUCH. I’ll even go so far as to say you don’t even need to be a comic book person to appreciate the story.

@ Monique- Suh-weet. I really think you’ll enjoy it. It was a non-stop read for me… which again, is something I haven’t experienced in a looong time.

@ Claire- Ahh… you’re SUCH a geek! If you’re serious about checking it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all.

@ .45- Oh man. I have always wanted to be a writer. And I think some point in the future, I might really consider penning my own novel. There are so many things I want to accomplish though. Sometimes I wonder if we’re given enough time in a single lifetime.

@ Single [ or Ne]- Awesome. This book more than has my approval! I positively loved it! Also, good to see you! :D

    Oh wait…you already answered that

“at least purchase it so the author can make a few bucks and feel encouraged to write other AWESOME literature.”

I hear ya. Life can really get in the way of things you want to do, and the years seem to start burning off faster and faster. Somtimes I’m like, “WTF happened to the last decade??” Then I remember, or at least flashes of it. :)

@ Meleah Rebeccah- LOL. Yup, I think you would really like it. Seriously, it’s a very smart and funny book.

@ .45- Boo… don’t remind me. Driving kids around makes it worse. I don’t feel much older than them, but I know I am and I think that’s what sucks.

    @ Claire- LOL…. GEEK!

@ Random- Oooo. I’ll have to check this out! :D

Female cyborg? I’d tap that ass.

  14. Angelika June 26th, 2008 at 6:53 am

I’m sorry, but as soon as I saw “Superheroes” my eyes glazed over.

Now had you said ghosts or vampires, I would have read it.

  15. fragileheart June 26th, 2008 at 7:09 am

Hm… not sure about the whole human cyborg thing. I like sci-fi but more like people with special abilities and not robot people. Bah… maybe I’m just being closed minded

  16. angelcjr June 26th, 2008 at 11:54 am

I’ll bite…I may go out and buy it after I finish reading “The Shack”.
